🎧 This Week’s Pelvic Health Beat ❤️

Since the new Fempower Health episodes are still in the works (launching this fall!), I thought I’d share some of the top-listened-to episodes on this important topic so far.

The episodes below are full of excellent, informative discussions from women who are some of the leading experts in pelvic pain today!

Each of these is worth a first-time listen, or even a repeat listen if it’s been a while.

“It’s possible to have severe endometriosis but no pain, and it’s possible to have no endometriosis but severe pain. So there’s such a bigger picture we need to deal with.”

Dr. Peta Wright

In this episode, Dr. Peta Wright and Dr. Thea Bowler get into a deep conversation about the intricacies of endometriosis—a common (yet far too overlooked) cause of chronic pelvic pain and infertility.

They discuss symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options. They also answer the question, “How do I talk to my doctor about my symptoms?”

"Surgery is just one part of the journey; personalized care is crucial for long-term management and recovery."

Dr. Shanti Mohling

In this other incredible endo-related interview, Dr. Shanti Mohling shares her experiences and expert knowledge on surgical interventions for endometriosis. She also shares how this is something a lot of women and even medical providers are not fully aware of.

We also talk about the surgery recovery process and the importance of personalized care plans for endo warriors. This episode offers practical tips if you’re considering, dreading, or recovering from an endometriosis surgery.

"The journey to managing endometriosis is as much about empowerment and informed choices as it is about medical treatment."

Katie Boyce

In this episode, patient advocate Katie Boyce discusses the various treatment options for endometriosis and the importance of advocating for oneself to try to receive the right option in the healthcare system. Her personal story is both inspiring and informative–prepare to be moved!

The Latest News in Pelvic Health

Are your genes the reason why chronic pain treatment isn’t helping?

A new study reveals that a genetic variant, Neuregulin 3, impacts women's response to the pain medication Neurontin (gabapentin) for chronic pelvic pain, a condition affecting nearly one in four women globally. These findings stress the importance of personalized treatment approaches to ensure greater relief and minimize side effects for patients. It also highlights a need for further genetic studies to validate these results and improve chronic pain management options.

Australia is funding pelvic health clinics while confronting gender-biased providers who dismiss “hysterical” women in pain.

Recent government inquiries in Australia recently highlighted significant gender bias in healthcare, particularly affecting women with chronic pelvic pain. Two-thirds of women report experiencing gender bias in the medical system, often being dismissed or labeled as "dramatic." The Victorian Pain Inquiry found that women generally experience more severe and long-lasting pain than men but are frequently not taken seriously by healthcare providers. In response, both state and federal governments are committing funds to improve women's health, including establishing endometriosis clinics and addressing medical misogyny to ensure women's health concerns are taken seriously.
